Goals

  • To provide injury prevention education to Motor Magic participants

Strategies

Motor Magic is an annual event taking place over the Labor Day weekend bringing car and racing fans together. The Motor Magic committee used this project to provide injury prevention education through a series of safety events. Initially the project began as a one day event and as a result of its success by the second year it became a two-day event.

FDHU & DOH car seat technicians provided car safety seat check-ups on Saturday and Minot PD technicians provided the same service on Sunday. Fatal vision goggles demonstrations and roll-over simulations were provided by the Prevention Dept. of the Minot Police Department. Also on site for attendee participation was the safety belt convincer as well as the “Saved By The Belt” video & display provided by the Minot PD. An Interactive Kiosk was provided to “test” participants’ driving/roadway knowledge & skills. Project Safe Neighborhoods provided an educational booth with incentives, educational brochures and materials and give-aways, including gun locks, t-shirts and water bottles. The Minot Police Department, Highway Patrol & Sheriff’s Office assisted in manning the booths and displays.

This project did not cost the Safe Community program any dollars. Planning took place in conjunction with monthly coalition meetings and all events and services were provided free of charge as in-kind donations.

Results

  • Many agencies successfully collaborated to provide injury prevention education & awareness about traffic safety and non-traffic safety to the Motor Magic participants.
