Strategies Becky Byzewski, Southwest Region Safe Communities Coordinator, spoke with local grade schools about collecting pennies in each classroom for prevention projects in the Dickinson area. Three elementary schools in Dickinson, Roosevelt, Jefferson, and St. Wenceslaus, agreed to participate. They were given mayonnaise jars with the Pennies for Prevention logo on them. These jars were placed at the schools from January through February. At the end of the contest, the money was taken to a local bank and counted. Roosevelt Elementary had a class-by-class contest, and the winning class received a popcorn and movie party. The Southwest Region Safe Communities had small plaques made and they were given to each school for participating. Roosevelt school also received individual class certificates. Results - Collected a total of $750.98
- Roosevelt Elementary won the contest by raising $571.92.
- Each school received 1/3 of the money raised to use for their own prevention activities.
