Regional, middle and high school students.Southwest North Dakota

Goals

  • to provide information and education to regional middle and high school students on the effects of alcohol consumption; and
  • to reinforce the dangers of underage consumption

Strategies

When possible, local law enforcement assisted and administered field sobriety tests to the older students. Older students wore the goggles and were partnered with younger students who were allowed to view what the older student saw as he or she attempted to perform with the goggles in place. Both student age groups played Game of Life.

Coalition chair person set up an obstacle course using the goggles for New Cub Fun Day. The message to the youth was that it is easier to perform without the influence of alcohol. The Coalition Chair person also used the goggles in his annual insurance presentation to the high school drivers' training class.

Results

  • Program implemented at Twin Buttes School and Taylor-Richardton Elementary Schools
  • Program implemented with approximately 65 children and youth at New Cub Fun Day, a district-wide event for new scouts and their parents.
  • Presentation to high school drivers' training classes provided opportunity to get the message to youth at a more personal level.
  • Total potential impact of regional middle and high school students = 11,072 students
