I have been involved with the Region I Safe Communities coalition for two and a half years now. I have been aware of the coalition for a long time before joining and replaced another health unit employee as our representative on the coalition. I really didn't know what to expect when I joined the coalition and am continually amazed at the coalition's projects. I specifically serve on the Occupant Protection committee because of my training as a car seat technician. I really like the fact that members volunteer to work together on many different projects within the safe communities' goals and usually receive a positive response from the community.

Presently, I expect the coalition activities to remain very noticeable in the community and to continue to raise awareness in everything from car/booster seat use to alcohol use, in order to prevent and reduce injuries. I will personally continue to provide education to caregivers about child restraints and participate in the other coalition activities. Although I like working with other members of the coalition to see a project come together, I find it disappointing when I am unable to motivate a behavior change in a caregiver.

My work experience has helped to prepare me for my work with the coalition. I am a nutritionist with the WIC Program at the Upper Missouri District Health Unit, so I see many mothers with babies and small children. Because of a need in the community, I have also been trained as a certified car seat technician. I also help with the administration of our local Safe Seats Program that provides education and car seats. [ end of article ]
