Amanda came to her present position with Dakota Prairie Community Action Agency as an unemployed college graduate who had been cruising the classified advertisements in the local newspaper. She discovered that job openings for her background in education were very rare, and decided to call about the Community Action position.

She has a BA in English and mass communications from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. She interviewed in mid-May with the former coordinator, Connie Rongen, and the Community Action supervisor, Janet Hanesson. One question she clearly remembers from her interview was, "Do you wear your seat belt?" Her answer was "YES," and she began work June 3, 2002.

From her previous employment and educational background, Amanda had expected to go into newspaper work. She worked at the local newspaper as a receptionist and student reporter when she was in High School. During college, she worked as a part time receptionist at the Minnesota State University office and as a customer service representative at the Fargo Forum. Her mass communications degree and her experiences as a receptionist and customer service representative steered her toward public relations, which is a perfect fit for her present position with Community Action.

Amanda states that she, "takes things as they come and likes spontaneity." She has found that her position demands spontaneity and believes that two of her college courses best prepared her. During the same semester, she took 19th century poetry and a media class requiring the writing of news releases.

Amanda believes the job duties have turned out to be much more than she initially anticipated, but states that she enjoys the great variety. Her schedule of activities changes daily and she works with individuals from all over the state of North Dakota. Amanda see her contacts with law enforcement, educators, business people, volunteers, and children as an unexpected bonus. She also enjoys her own office in a newly renovated building, with the water cooler and a mini-fridge right across the hall.

Following her first Safe Communities meeting, Amanda feels that she has a lot to accomplish. She was very impressed with everyone's capabilities, as well as with how relaxed and comfortable everyone was. It was a pleasant surprise for her that everyone was so nice, easy-going, and helpful.

All six of Amanda's sisters live in southern Minnesota, but they are originally from the Devils Lake area. Amanda says that she appreciates having extended family close by. She also enjoys the familiarity with the area and the people. In her free time, Amanda likes to read novels and lists her favorite author as Pat Conroy and her favorite book as Beach Music. She is presently looking for another hobby.

Amanda looks forward to becoming more acquainted with her schedule and more familiar with the flow of activities. She states that her personal goals are to become more articulate and more organized.
