Although the Jamestown Safe Community Task Force has been in place since 1988, Bruce has only been the coordinator for this program since 1999. Bruce initially noticed the abundant use of acronyms and program-specific jargon. Another early discovery was the extensive amount of time, work and contacts the previous coordinator had developed and maintained.

Bruce believes that the part time community program had been run as a full time, regional program. As a 25-year veteran with the Jamestown Police Department, Bruce chose to focus Bruce Juddthe program on the community of Jamestown and plans to contain the activities to the parameters of a part time program.

He enjoys and appreciates being able to complete much of his Safe Communities responsibilities from his home. The combination of job duties through his employment as full time Jamestown Police Department Lieutenant and part time Safe Communities coordinator correlate well for him. He is often contacted by local media for input and comments on a variety of law enforcement and safety issues. Bruce has been integral in maintaining a wonderful working relationship with local media.

Bruce enjoys getting input and ideas from other agencies and from the other coordinators at quarterly meetings. He looks to the coordinators for support and has learned from them, as well as everyone else he has met through Safe Communities. Bruce appreciates the support of everyone in Safe Communities, including the support and participation provided by his coalition.

Bruce came to Jamestown in 1974, after completing a four-year tour of duty on the USS Independence aircraft carrier while enrolled in the United States Navy. He began attending college part time in 1994 and received a diploma in 1997. He views the college education he earned while working full time as his greatest accomplishment and is proud of reaching his goal. His studies in history, political science and criminal justice are helpful to him as a police department supervisor and help him focus on the big picture while addressing communication and conflict issues. He views both of his jobs with a helper attitude -- enforcing laws, resolving conflicts, looking for progress, and removing hazards and barriers. Noting his acceptance of the part time job with Safe Communities less than two years after completing his college studies, Bruce sincerely believes that he would not be a Safe Communities coordinator today if he had not previously been a part time student while maintaining full time employment.

Bruce and his wife, Carol, enjoy an active lifestyle, including bike riding, fishing, scuba diving, water and downhill skiing, and golf on occasion. They also enjoy remodeling homes with a group of friends, and are presently working on their third personally-owned home, which Bruce insists will be the last one.

Bruce's work philosophy is to "keep it simple" -- get the job done in one contact. end of article
