Designated Driver project and Safety Belt Blitz are some of the highlights in December.

Multiple Holiday Safety Focus:

THS SB Blitz: Trenton High School Holiday Safety Belt Blitz December 17-21, 2001. Monday 170 flyers were posted on car windows in the parking lots of TISA and Trenton High School. Tuesday safety belt observation survey was completed before school and 32 incentives were given to buckled drivers. Thursday 120 safety messages were handed out on candy canes. Friday the SADD Chapter members gave a brief message over the high school intercom.

SADD/Wms Co. Sheriff's Office PSA: Scott Busching, Williams County Sheriff and four SADD students recorded a Public Service Announcement for Northern Plains Radio. Parents of the SADD students were required to authorize permission for their child to be excused from school, ride with the coordinator and represent the Trenton SADD Chapter for the recorded PSA. The PSA ran three to four times daily between December 21 and 31, 2001, and identified several issues surrounding drinking and driving, including:

  • drinking and driving during the holiday season;
  • impaired driving is not an accident, but a serious crime causing a death every 33 minutes;
  • local criminal justice agencies will increase enforcement as part of the National Holiday Lifesavers Mobilization;
  • violators lose their license, automobile, time from work, and money for fines and court costs;
  • violators may face imprisonment for vehicular manslaughter or homicide;
  • celebrating responsibly
  • drinking is a choice
  • calling a friend or designating a driver
    and
  • You Dink and Drive - You Lose!

Designated Driver Project: Thank you letters were sent to "Designated Driver" volunteers, enclosing a complete list of the seven volunteer drivers. Four male and three female drivers agreed to be available 24 hours per day, seven days per week for the duration of the program, which ran from December 21 through December 31, 2001. A total of five rides were provided. Several posters promoting the program were prepared and provided to the businesses involved. One poster instructed patrons to ask the bartender about the "FREE" Designated Driver Service; another reminded them to Buckle Up! Every Ride - Every Time; and the third stated "Let's have something to really celebrate this holiday season . . . Life. The greatest gift you can give may be a ride home. Please, don't drink and drive." and included the "Do Buckle, Don't Booze" logo. A list of designated drivers and their telephone numbers was placed at three local liquor establishments: Larry's Bar, Highway 2; State Line Club, Highway 2; and Buford Bar, Buford. The list also outlined the dates of the Designated Driver program, that the rides were free to the general public and limited to within a 20 mile radius, and that the service was sponsored by the Trenton Indian Service Area's Injury Prevention/Safe Communities Program. The involved businesses were instructed as to which volunteer designated driver(s) were located nearest to them. Designated drivers were given the right to request who the passenger was and decline for any reason by asking the caller to contact the next person on the list. The coordinator was available for any problems at all times at either office or home. Delivery of thank you certificates and gift certificates were made via certified letter on January 2, 2002.

Holiday placemats with safety messages printed on them were provided to three community locations. The 1804 Country Store, TISA Cafeteria and Trenton Senior Center used the placemats provided by NDDOT.[end of article]
