North Dakota Department of Health, Southwestern District Health Unit, Southwest Coalition of Safe Communities, Parkway Ford Lincoln Mercury and Community Action Partnership are joining together for a Boost, Then Buckle event to be held on October 19, 2004 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Parkway Ford Lincoln Mercury, 2585 I-95 Business Loop, Dickinson, ND.

Why is a booster seat important? It's all about safety! When children under 4 feet 9 inches use a seat belt alone, the lap belt fits too high, running across the stomach - and the shoulder belt falls across the neck. Children will often put the shoulder belt under their arm or behind their back. In a crash, these scenarios can cause serious injury - or even death.

Who should use a booster seat? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a child is ready for a booster seat once he or she is around 40 pounds - at which point he/she has outgrown a toddler seat. From this point on, the child should use a booster seat until he/she is 4 feet, 9 inches tall.

To qualify for a free booster seat:

  • Your child must currently weight between 40 and 80 pounds
  • Your vehicle must have lap and shoulder belts in a rear seating position.
  • Your child must be present.
  • Booster seats are limited to first come, first serve. Quantities are limited so the above criteria will be re-checked before a seat is distributed on October 19th.

Parkway Ford Lincoln Mercury has agreed to host the event. Other booths will be on display inside Parkway Ford. For more information or to request a voucher for a booster seat, please call Joy at 701-483-0171.[ end of article ]
