North Dakota Conference on Injury Prevention and Traffic Safety

"Preventing Injuries Through Advocacy"
Held at the Radisson Inn in Bismarck, ND November 16 & 17, 2004
Featured speakers include:
- Nancy Amidei who has been involved in social policy both inside and outside government. She has authored numerous publications, including "So You Want To Make A Difference," a guide to policy advocacy.
- Jack Walsh is the executive director of the Danny Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting babies from preventable injury and death associated with unsafe cribs, other children's products and sleep environment.
- Janette Fennell is the president of Kids and Cars whose mission is to increase awareness about the dangers of leaving children unattended in or around motor vehicles.
- John Moffat's presentation "Target Zero" explains how Washington achieved 95 percent seat belt use with a secondary law and how to increase use in smaller states with populations resistant to change
Plus several North Dakota speakers:
- Anne Buchanan from Fargo will speak about the death of her son from alcohol poisoning during "Power Hour".
- Cressy Liljenquist from Valley City became an advocate for mental health following the death of her husband from suicide.
- Jim and Twylah Blotsky from Fargo will share the story of how their children were protected with seat belts and boosters in a major crash.
Other topics include: playground safety, traffic safety, second-hand products, Risk Watch injury prevention curriculum, child passenger safety and poison prevention.
The conference provides participants with current information about injuries nationally and in North Dakota and offers promising practices for prevention.
CEUs are being requested for EMTs, law enforcement, social workers and child care workers. An application has been submitted for nursing credits. Community Health Section, North Dakota Department of Health is an Approved Provider of continuing education by CNE-Net, the education division of the North Dakota Nurses Association, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
