Red Ribbon Week activities will be conducted October 23 through October 31 in Southwest North Dakota. This year's campaign slogan, "Keep America Drug Free" will be displayed on the Red Ribbons.

Each year, Red Ribbon Week provides us with an opportunity to renew our commitment to a healthy and drug-free lifestyle and show our dedication to education and prevention efforts in our schools and communities.

Red Ribbon Week was established to honor Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement agent who was kidnapped and murdered while investigating a drug gang in Mexico. Each year since 1986 citizens respond to the memory of the slain agent by wearing red ribbons, showing their support in the war against drugs. This was the inception of a grass-roots campaign against the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Red Ribbon Week quickly spread to every state in America. Celebrations commonly take place during the last week of October.

Red Ribbons are worn by students, teachers, parents, law enforcement, and businesspersons to symbolize each individual's commitment to preventing drug abuse in schools, workplaces and communities.

This national weekly celebration allows educators, parents, community groups, students and others to focus on the work being done to stop the spread of drugs and draw attention to the growing millions of youngsters who have pledged to live drug-free.

If you have any questions about the Red Ribbon Campaign, or would like red ribbons for your business, school, or church, please contact Becky or Kathy at Community Action 227-0131. Please join us this year in an effort to make our community a safe community.
