Summer Safety Day activities are scheduled for May 2nd and 3rd at the Dickinson Rec Center. The event will be held in conjunction with Dickinson Park & Recreations' summer activity registration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2nd and from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd.

Many booths will have displays and activities for youth to enjoy, including a bike rodeo. Youth are encouraged to bring their bikes, have them safety checked by volunteers and complete the bike rodeo route.

Numerous displays will include motorcycle safety, camping safety, swimming safety, 911 safety, sports injury & fall prevention, farm safety, animal safety and child photo ID's. All youth may register for a new boys and girls bicycle donated by area businesses.

The first 100 youth to visit each booth and bike rodeo will receive a free bike helmet. Bicycle helmets are the best protection against mishaps that cause death or injury. All bicyclists should wear a proper fitting helmet each time they ride a bike. The helmet should fit snugly and cover the forehead; damaged or improper fitting helmets should be replaced.

Each year approximately 800 bicyclists are killed and another 60,000 are injured in motor vehicle related crashes and hospital emergency rooms treat 500,000 bicycle related injuries. For more information on bicycle safety and or bicycle helmets, contact Becky or Kathy with the Southwest Coalition of Safe Communities at 227-0131.[ end of article ]
