New Study Finds Drivers Age 21 to 24 Have Highest Involvement Rates February 27, 2009, 4:12 pm
New National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) research shows that between 2002 and 2006, nearly four fatalities out of 10 involved alcohol-impaired crashes in the last two weeks of December. The new study also found that 21-24 year-old drivers are involved in more alcohol-impaired fatal crashes than any other age group, announced NHTSA Acting Administrator David Kelly today. Between 2000 and 2003, NHTSA supported demonstration programs in seven States to reduce impaired driving using well-publicized and highly visible enforcement. The projects were conducted in Georgia, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Indiana, and Michigan. This report, "The Effectiveness of Seven Publicized Enforcement Demonstration Programs to Reduce Impaired Driving: Georgia, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, and Texas," Fell, J., Langston, E., Lacey, J. and Tippetts, S., DOT HS 810 940, PIRE, May 2008, describes the program evaluations conducted in each of these seven States. NHTSA Case Studies on Strategic Evaluation State Program - In 2002, NHTSA undertook a new approach that focused strategically on reducing alcohol-related crashes, injuries and deaths in States with especially high numbers and/or rates of alcohol-related fatalities. The agency identified 13 States to participate in the Strategic Evaluation State (SES) initiative. In 2005, NHTSA invited two additional States to participate. This report, "Strategic Evaluation States Initiative - Case Studies of Alaska, Georgia and West Virginia," provides case studies of three States that participated in this program and had positive results.
