Street Smart program drove the message home by choosing a member of the audience to demonstrate exactly what happens when a paramedic tries to save the life of a trauma patient. Chris Stocks of Street Smart said, "I think when we have to explain what we have to do to somebody to treat their injuries, that's when it really becomes real for them."

North Dakota experienced a 9.8 percent decrease in motor vehicle fatalities and a fatality rate of 1.45 per 100 million VMT in 2006. The challenge will be to continue to reduce the number of fatalities to meet the 2011 performance measure of 1.26 per 100 million VMT.

Three Downstate schools are ready to start programs and 10 other suburban schools have asked about starting a program. In addition, Wal-Mart is committing seed money. Three Downstate schools are ready to start programs and 10 other suburban schools have asked about starting a program. In addition, Wal-Mart is committing seed money. Some students found buckled up are given freebies, a gift card or a coupon for a sandwich, coffee, doughnuts or similar treat, all donated by local merchants. If the surveys show a seat belt compliance rate of 90 percent to 95 percent at a school, one student's contract is drawn from the stack and that student is eligible for a new car, donated by Crystal Lake Pontiac-GMC and given away at a banquet in April. At schools showing seat belt rates at 95 percent and higher, two students get a new car.
