Chris Stocks of Street Smart said, "I think when we have to explain what we have to do to somebody to treat their injuries, that's when it really becomes real for them."

Seat belt effort soars

chicagotribune - Now, after a name change, the program is poised to explode across the suburbs and other places. Five schools have been added this year. Three Downstate schools are ready to start programs and 10 other suburban schools have asked about starting a program. In addition, Wal-Mart is committing seed money. Now, after a name change, the program is poised to explode across the suburbs and other places. Five schools have been added this year. Three Downstate schools are ready to start programs and 10 other suburban schools have asked about starting a program. In addition, Wal-Mart is committing seed money. Some students found buckled up are given freebies, a gift card or a coupon for a sandwich, coffee, doughnuts or similar treat, all donated by local merchants. If the surveys show a seat belt compliance rate of 90 percent to 95 percent at a school, one student's contract is drawn from the stack and that student is eligible for a new car, donated by Crystal Lake Pontiac-GMC and given away at a banquet in April. At schools showing seat belt rates at 95 percent and higher, two students get a new car.
