TISA employees now wear their seatbelts while driving to work.
Trenton Indian Service Area (T.I.S.A.) has made great progress in their efforts to raise their employee seat belt usage rate.
In November of 2004, an initial seat belt survey was conducted by the TISA Injury Prevention Program during the "Drive Safely to Work" week. The results indicated that only 37% of the TISA employees were wearing their seat belts when driving to work. This alarming figure prompted the TISA injury Prevention Program to construct and implement a seat belt policy into the Trenton Indian Service Area's Policy Manual. The TISA Chair Person and Board of Directors were very supportive. On January 10, 2005 they approved the seat belt policy and it went into effective immediately. The idea was that because such a great portion of the jobs within the TISA organization require an extensive amount of driving, making it mandatory to wear a seat belt at work might in fact become a "habit" and get them to wear a seat belt all the time.

During the recent NHTSA May Mobilization - "Click It or Ticket" campaign, one of the many activities conducted by the TISA Injury Prevention Program was an employee post-seat belt usage survey. This survey was conducted on May 18, 2005 in the same manner as the initial survey. The results indicated a significant increase to 59% of the TISA employees were now wearing their seat belts while driving to work. At the May TISA staff meeting, the TISA Tribal Chairman, Walt Moran congratulated each employee "caught" wearing a seat belt and gave them a "I was caught Buckled Up" reward that was supplied by the TISA Injury Prevention Program.
